The VFL Bombers carried out their most comprehensive performance of the season against Geelong last weekend, thumping the Cats to the tune of 92 points.

And there weren’t too many Dons that didn’t impress, with a number of players in line for a call up to take on the Eagles this Saturday afternoon.

So keep your eyes peeled for any one of these four names travelling west across the Nullarbor this weekend.

Shaun McKernan

McKernan is constantly banging down the door for selection week-after-week. Every single time he steps on to the field at VFL level, McKernan looks a step above the rest. Once again, he dominated in Saturday’s curtain raiser, as the big-man was in everything. He racked up 28 touches, took eight marks and booted two goals. Still only 24-years-old, McKernan has plenty of upside. He’s on the rookie list at the moment because of Jason Winderlich’s return but he’s ready if a spot opens up on the main list.

Shaun Edwards

Edwards was in great form against the Cats kicking four goals, collecting 22 possessions and taking seven marks. Having worked hard on his defensive side to his game, it seems as though Edwards’ attacking side has reaped the benefits as well. It’s impressive to see the newfound consistency of the former-Giant using his prowess forward of centre, then pushing back to help defend. This all-round improvement to Edwards’ game could be just what he needs to get him over the line and into the AFL side.

Jayden Laverde

Laverde has had a solid patch of form in the last month, continuing to impress coaches with his development. An AFL debut could be on the horizon a bit closer than what many people think. The first-round draft pick keeps showing glimpses of his brilliant skills and hunger for the contest, and last weekend was no different. Laverde was leaping for everything he could get his hands near, taking a whopping 12 marks, as well as picking up 21 disposals and kicking a goal.

Jason Winderlich

After just one game back from injury, it would be no surprise to see Winderlich’s rebirth back into the AFL outfit. The smooth-mover gathered 18 touches, as well as racking up 10 marks in the VFL Dons’ big win, however his presence on the field was far beyond his possession output. Winderlich’s experience and class was influential his all afternoon, setting play after play as an on-field coach, as well as working with the younger Bombers. ‘Licka’ could be the addition the side needs to avoid a three-game losing streak heading into the bye.
