Essendon's big man stocks are under early-season pressure following the suspension of David Hille. The problem has been compounded with Jason Laycock succumbing to a thigh injury that will sideline him for at least another two weeks.

Laycock has had an on-going battle for much of the pre-season with his body. A knee arthroscope was followed by an ankle arthroscope and the thigh injury is latest in a frustrating series of injuries.

Aaron Henneman will also miss another week with a bruised shoulder while Andrew Lee faces a fitness test after rolling his ankle so the Bombers big man options are limited for this week's clash with the Western Bulldogs.

Courtney Johns is also battling an ankle injury and will face a fitness test. Even if he passes the test it would be unlikely he would be rushed straight into the senior side.

Dean Rioli's on-going battle with a knee soreness continues and he will be under the close eye of medical staff on the training track this week. Heath Hocking may return from a quad injury this week.

The good news is that James Hird is expected to play after overcoming a calf injury.
