After a disappointing 43-point loss to Brisbane, assistant coach, Ashley Prescott, has said the rollercoaster start to the Bombers’ season is due to an inability to get proper reward in front of goals.

Speaking on the Weekend Rewind, Prescott said that the Bombers had five more inside 50’s then Brisbane but were unable to convert as the delivery was still not at the level it needs to be at.

“The inside 50’s was probably a bit misleading as it is about the quality and what you do with it once you have the ball inside 50,” Prescott said.

“Our inability to kick those goals and Brisbane’s ability to kick so straight and be so efficient was really the difference.

“We second guessed ourselves when we had the football and also defensively. If you look at some of the previous games we have played, when we’ve been a lot harder at the ball and a lot harder at the opposition- we didn’t do that.

“We were thinking too long and allowed too much time for Brisbane to execute their skills. You can’t take it away from Brisbane, they really did hunt us and they were coming off a humiliating loss the previous week.

“We were coming off a high but that is no excuse. We have to make sure we get our starts right because I think that is putting a fair bit of pressure on the side also.""

Prescott acknowledged the performance of midfielder Jason Winderlich, who took a some strong marks and was the Bombers’ most effective forward kicking two goals.

“Winderlich played on Patfull, who’s been in terrific form for Brisbane. With Jason down there a bit at the moment, it might take a bit away from what he can do in the midfield or even across half-back at times,” he said.

“But his ability to kick inside 50 is very good and I suppose once we get a few players back into the mix, Winderlich will probably tend to play a little bit more in the midfield even though he has been very creative up forward and certainly looked very dangerous on the weekend.”
