Dyson Heppell has thrown his support behind Jobe Watson continuing as Captain.

Heppell took over the on-field leadership responsibilities when Watson was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury following the Bombers match against St Kilda in round 14.

But when Watson returns to full fitness, Heppell says the 2012 Brownlow medalist remains the right man to lead the side.

“I think Jobe’s got plenty left in him and I’d love for him to be skipper for the next couple of years,” Heppell said.

Heppell will lead the team for the seven remaining matches this season, including his 100th game this Saturday.

“I’m really enjoying the role at the moment,” he said.

“I’ve learnt a hell of a lot of the likes of Jobe, BJ (Brendon Goddard) and Brent Stanton.”

Former Essendon Coach Kevin Sheedy said not only will Heppell benefit from the leadership experience, but Watson could also benefit from some time away from the playing field.

“Sometimes you need to step back.  This injury might be really great for him from a point of view like that,” he said.

“Look what’s happened to Gary Ablett since he’s been back.  He’s playing fantastic footy again.

“He (Watson) has got a lot of good footy left in him.  This forced rest sometimes really re-energises you.”
