Josh Begley has produced another promising performance in Essendon VFL’s 15 point win over Williamstown at Windy Hill Oval on Saturday.
The first year player was an emergency for the senior side but returned to Melbourne in time to boot four goals and collect 11 disposals, five tackles and three marks in the win over the second placed Seagulls.
“It was a super effort again from Josh, he flew back last night from Sydney and it didn’t impact his preparation at all,” VFL Coach Paul Corrigan said.
“I thought his performance was outstanding.
“To kick four goals and have his consistent work ethic makes him one you can always rely on to keep working through the four quarters.
“He got the reward for his efforts with four goals.
“He is certainly putting his name up there for selection with his consistent form, hopefully he gets a look at soon.”
Darcy Parish returned through the VFL side after overcoming a calf injury.
He was a standout in the midfield collecting 27 disposals, taking four marks, applying two tackles and kicking a goal.
“Darcy was really good, he ran out the game really well,” Corrigan said.
“He really sparked us around the contest and just his tenacity and intensity around the ball was good with his pressure and ability to win the ball.
“He played predominately as a midfielder and spent some time forward … he had a real impact on the game.”
This was the first time Parish has ever played in the Bombers VFL side.
Another player to Don the red and black VFL jumper for the first time was Joel Ottavi.
He kicked two goals and took five marks in his debut.
“He started the game really well. It was really good to see him get a couple of goals early. That gives you confidence especially in your first game,” Corrigan said.
“I thought he played really well, at times he was double teamed because they had a spare player and he was still able to bring the ball to ground.
“That’s all you can ask, we asked him to compete and I thought he did that really well.”
It was a tough game at Windy Hill with the lead changing multiple times.
“Obviously right from the start we knew that they’re a good side, they are sitting 2nd on the ladder and they’ve been super consistent all year,” Corrigan said.
“Most of the game was going to be won around the contest and who could get the edge out of that.
“I thought we played really well with our clearances, our contested ball work and pressure on the ball.
“We were able to sustain that for a lot of the game which led us to be able to get in front at the end of the game.”
The win is Essendon’s fifth of the season and leaves the side in seventh spot on the ladder.
“It’s about how we won, that’s what I was more pleased about than the ladder position,” he said.
“Obviously it keeps us in touch and keeps us in the eight which is great.
“It gives the guys a bit of reward for the effort that they put in, not only today but in recent weeks when we’ve been close and maybe haven’t been able to get over the line.
“For them to come away with a couple of goal win today, it’s a great reward for them and gives them a bit of confidence going forward.
“Hopefully we can be consistent in the games going forward. If we play like we did today hopefully we will win more than we lose.”
