Will he or won’t he? That is the question at Windy Hill this week surrounding James Hird’s availability for the Bombers clash against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night. Earlier in the week, Kevin Sheedy declared Hird a 70 per cent chance for the match, but today before training he doubted if his champion player would be fit in time.

""I don’t know if he will play to be perfectly honest. He will always train, that’s just Hird but I doubt if he will play,"" Sheedy explained.

""He hardly had got a nick, but do you blow him and waste him if it was a calf problem. It gives us the opportunity to keep playing guys that we want to play anyway, so we will keep him under wraps for a bit.

""It might be a season where he plays two weeks on and one week off,"" Sheedy said.

The trip to Brisbane remains a major factor behind the question mark over Hird, with the coach today at his cryptic best.

""Last week I wasn’t sure and they weren’t sure either. John Quinn probably might have played him but Doc Reid might have thought we shouldn’t. So where does that leave the coaches and selectors?

""It leaves a question mark so I would rather get it on the table and say look if it’s not its not.

""Travelling up there in planes and those sort of things, sitting down for a couple of hours and then getting out on a hard track, maybe it might be best setting him up for a 20 week season.

""Most of these soft tissue injuries are nearly there, not there or might be there and that leaves us as footy coaches in the land of not sure.""
