Sunday was a history-making day for Essendon’s newest side with the VWFL Bombers claiming their first ever win over arch rivals Hawthorn by 27 points.

Increasing its lead at every change, Essendon’s performance was spearheaded by forward Caleb Logan’s haul of seven goals as his side cantered to an 8.7 (55) to 4.4 (28) victory at Boroondara Sports Complex.

“Our forward line was awesome, obviously particularly Caleb, but also Ben Milton, Roy Davies and David Craig,” captain Louis Rowe said.

After opening the season with a narrow loss to Collingwood and a heavy defeat at the hands of St Kilda, the win over the Hawks was validation for the week-to-week development of Rowe’s side.

“Each week we’ve been improving communication and teamwork,” says Rowe.

“The backs in James Leonard and Will Taylors have been working together locking down the backline and Miranda Charlton and myself have been playing forward and in the centre.”

The win puts Essendon in fourth place on the ladder in the five-team competition at the end of round three with the Bombers looking to make it two from two when they take on the top-of-the-table Tigers this Saturday.

“They’ll be a tough opponent,” Rowe said.

“Riley Fitzgerald has 15 goals in two games, so they’re going to be a hard one to handle.”
