Former Essendon captain James Hird will find out today if he will miss this weekend's season opener against the Swans. ""I came off the track with a sore calf and will have an MRI today to find out exactly what the problem is,"" Hird said.

It is a bitter pill for Hird to swallow in what may be his last season of AFL football. In the final practice match of the pre-season Hird was in superb form and was clearly the best player on the ground against Richmond in MIldura.

Courtney Johns will also miss this weekend with a minor ankle injury. The problem isn't serious and he is expected to be available for the Bombers' round 2 clash with Brisbane at the Gabba.
