2014 was the year of Dyson Heppell. The young star proved exactly why he has been touted as the future captain of the club as he strung together his most consistent and impressive season to date.
Missing only one game through injury, Heppell averaged 28.5 disposals in 21 matches as well as an impressive 99 tackles – the most among any Bomber in the competition.
Heppell came into his own in the absence of Captain Jobe Watson. He quickly adopted a leadership role on and off the field helping the team to some key victories, demonstrating some key individual performances along the way. Most notable was his 40 disposals against Geelong in Round 15, a personal best.
His consistency and hard work caught the eye of many of his peers, as he charged to fourth place in the tightly contested 2014 AFL Players MVP as well as being named as the Captain of the ‘22 Under 22’ team for the second year in a row. Heppell also collected a place in the All Australian squad and the Essendon Fans’ MVP in 2014.
Dyson Heppell’s reliability on and off the field, as well as his determination to continually improve his game, puts him in a very strong position as one of the favourites for this year’s Crichton Medal.
