Box Hill defeated Essendon VFL by 41 points in their final practice match at the NEC Hangar on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks, who equally fielded a strong contingent of AFL-listed players on the day, were largely the better side in terms of polish and a dangerous run-and-carry game, despite the best efforts of a competitive Bombers outfit.

After a slow start, the Dons got going through Archer Day-Wicks and Tom Edwards, who each finished with two majors in promising outings.

Edwards' lead-up play was a standout and if not for some troubles with the blustery conditions, could've found himself with at least four goals to his name thanks to the opportunities he created from his aerial strength.

Day-Wicks' production in his second full game provided plenty of spark, looking strong over the footy and winning some key contests while also being a danger around goal.

Box Hill's third term broke the game open and ultimately established a margin too difficult for the Dons to run down, but the home side continued to press forward and generate scoring chances until the final siren. Jared Eckersley contributed with another two goals and looks set for an exciting year in a developing forward line.

There were some strong performers across the lines for the Dons, with Saad El-Hawli looking full of confidence off the back of a couple of exciting performances in a row at VFL level - his goal from the forward pocket to open the final term was a particular highlight.

Xavier O'Neill was tireless in his work through the middle of the park and won plenty of contested ball, with youngster Zak Johnson also continuing to develop nicely at the level off half back and through the centre after a lengthy layoff from shoulder surgery.

Essendon VFL officially open their campaign this Saturday against Williamstown at the NEC Hangar, kicking off at 3:05pm AEDT.
