Essendon Football Club has thrown its support behind the Greenhouse Challenge – an innovative new program designed to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions from Australian industry and business.

By doing so, Essendon Football Club has become the first sporting club in Australia to become involved in the program.

The program is part of Australia’s commitment to the International Convention on Climate Change agreed to in Kyoto in 1997.

The convention is part of a global effort to avoid the harmful effects of changes in climate due to the build-up of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere.

The are a number of reasons Essendon Football Club has signed up with the Greenhouse Challenge – reasons which should encourage other members of business and industry to get involved. These reasons include:

? savings in electricity and gas bills

? an enhanced public profile and image of our company

? use of the Greenhouse Challenge logo on our products and advertising

? heightened employee commitment to waste and cost cutting

An energy audit on Essendon Football Club last season conducted by AGL found areas where we could save significantly on energy use.

The changes equated to an annual saving of $4300. This in turns equates to an amazing 103 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions that are no longer released into the atmosphere.

“It’s good for Essendon Football Club to get involved in a project that will not only lower our costs but is a small part of a much greater cause. The reduction of greenhouse gases is of global importance but it is a problem that has to be addressed from the bottom up and we encourage all households and businesses to have a look at their energy consumption,” Essendon marketing manager Mike McKenna said.

The Greenhouse Challenge is a Commonwealth Government initiative being implemented by NIETL/NORTH Link, a northern region of Melbourne Business Network and Economic Development Organistation, in association with the Australian Greenhouse Office.

To become a Greenhouse Challenger all you have to do is develop an greed action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and report on your progress.

Businesses wanting to become involved in the NIETL/NORTH Link Greenhouse Challenge should contact John Andrews on (03)94719000.
