HIRD AND FLETCHER OUT
Can one man be this unlucky when it comes to injury? Apparently he can. Essendon skipper James Hird slightly tore his calf muscle at Essendon's skills session this afternoon and has been ruled out of the West Coast match. Bomber coach Kevin Sheedy said the new injury has nothing to do with Hird's prior calf injury that sidelined him for the past two weeks.""James injured his calf at training and it has nothing to do with the superficial blood clot in his vein. It was an unfortunate accident at training and he will probably be out for two weeks,"" Sheedy said on Channel 7 news this evening.

In other news from training Dustin Fletcher unfortunately failed a fitness test and has been ruled out of the Round 10 clash. Fletcher has been sidelined for the past three matches with ankle ligament damage. The injury is worse than originally thought and despite training all week the All Australian defender will not get across the line. ""Fletcher won't play either but Matthew Lloyd is definitely in. With Fletcher and Hird out it gives a couple of kids an opportunity who might play sensational for us,"" Sheedy said.
""We need every win we can get at the moment. We face the second top side who will be difficult to beat. We are still there with an opportunity and we have to grasp that opportunity this weekend. If we can get this win which is so important we will move on with great confidence,"" said the four time premiership coach.
Footy can be a tough game sometimes. It is not easy breaking into the senior line-up – just ask Ted Richards. In the absence of James Hird, Matthew Lloyd and Dustin Fletcher in recent weeks, Richards has been given an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands. He is not getting too carried away with his recent good form - with six games under his belt he is focussing on consolidating his spot in the senior side. The Engine Room caught up with Richards in the lead-up to the match against West Coast.
