MISITI MADE VICE-CAPTAIN OF BOMBERS
Joe Misiti was today made a vice-captain of the Essendon Football Club. He joins Sean Wellman, Matthew Lloyd and Mark Mercuri who already hold the title while James Hird will again captain of club. Misiti, who made his debut in 1992, has played 181 senior games with the Bombers. At the end of last season he was also made a life member of the club. Misiti was naturally thrilled when Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy announced his on-field role in front of his teammates before training. ""It's great. I have played at Essendon all my life and grew up in the area - to be a part of the leadership group will be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it,"" Misiti said.

""I'm sure there are a number of players deserving of the job so it is a real honour. In some ways everyone is a leader on the ground but it is nice to have the job officially. It is a vote of confidence from the match committee,"" Misiti said. Misiti has had an outstanding pre-season and is primed for a big year. It is excellent news for Essendon supporters - Misiti was missing with injury early last season and he was sadly missed.
Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said it was not a decision the match committee took lightly. ""Joe is replacing Michael Long and he was one of the greatest leaders this club has had. Joe knows a lot is expected of him but we all believe he is up to it. He's a dual premiership player and the young players really look up to him,"" Sheedy said. ""Joe has put in a very serious pre-season and I would like to think we are still to see the best of him.""
The Essendon players swapped their football boots for cricket pads yesterday at the Tullamarine Indoor Cricket Centre. Six teams participated in the round robin competition, including one team of coaches. The rules were simple - 16 overs per team, a maximum of two overs per bowler and four overs per batting combination. It was a tight contest with many players showing the had no idea about the game. It was the coach's team who stole the points at the end of the day. ""It was extremely competitive out there. All the boys wanted to win and there was no room for error. Chris Heffernan was impressive with the ball and Paul Barnard with the bat - however it was the coaches who showed the players how it is done,"" event organiser David Flood said.
