Essendon remains hopeful that Matthew Lloyd's hamstring injury may not be as serious as first thought. Lloyd left the ground during the third quarter against the Bulldogs last Sunday with what appeared to be a serious hamstring problem.

However Lloyd also copped an elbow to the muscle as he fell to the ground after the marking contest and as a result is also suffering from some bruising. The bruising means Lloyd has not had the injury scanned and it may not happen until later this week if at all.

""He bleeds a lot and at this stage that means it isn't worthwhile scanning the injury because of the cork - it might happen at a later stage but at the moment we haven't arranged for him to have it scanned,"" Essendon football manager Dom Cato said.

Lloyd however appears likely to miss the Anzac Day clash and the following round against Hawthorn. With the new skipper sidelined, there will be plenty of discussion this week as to who might lead the Bombers out on Anzac Day.

Below Lloyd, the Essendon leadership group comprises Jason Johnson, Mark Johnson, James Hird, Damien Peverill and David Hille. It would seem certain Essendon's stand in captain will come from that group.

Have your say. Who should captain Essendon on Anzac Day?
