Essendon and Hawthorn met each other in three consecutive Grand Finals from 1983 to 1985, a feat that has been unmatched in VFL/AFL history since.

Both teams featured several legends of the game and remarkably ten players from this match later went on to become senior VFL/AFL coaches. Former Essendon great Merv Neagle, who tragically passed away in August this year, was also a member of the Bomber’s victorious 1984 team.

The Final Story 1984 brings to life the brutality of football in the 1980s at a time when Australian Football was dominated by these two fierce rivals.

New interviews feature Essendon greats Sheedy, Simon Madden, Terry Daniher, Billy Duckworth and Kevin Walsh along with Hawthorn legends Leigh Matthews, Rodney Eade, Terry Wallace, Peter Schwab and Russell Greene.

They detail the contrasting styles of coaches Allan ‘Yabby’ Jeans and Sheedy, recount the emergence of interchange rotations and shed light on Sheedy’s claims of Hawthorn’s illegal substance use.

Seven Melbourne Managing Director Lewis Martin said: “These documentaries are a national sporting treasure and this episode from 1984 is an absolute beauty with a step back in time to the good old days of 1980s football.”
