Round 11 kicked off on Friday night at The Dome when the Kangaroos took on Richmond. It was an emotional affair with Jason McCartney returning to the seniors after overcoming the horrific injuries he sustained in the Bali bombings. It was close all game with no more than a goal separating the two teams at every change. Richmond looked to have the game won in the last quarter until the Kangaroos fought back and kicked two late goals to win by three points.
After a disappointing month Hawthorn turned things around to upset Adelaide at the MCG. Shane Crawford was instrumental in the middle and finished with 18 disposals. It was an arm-wrestle all game but Hawthorn came out on top by five points to give them their fourth win for the season.
Port Adelaide ended Fremantle’s five game winning streak on Saturday at AAMI Stadium. Port was too strong and led all game. Warren Tredrea continued his stellar season and finished with seven goals. Port ran out winners by 39-points and moved into second spot on the ladder.
A disappointing second half by the Bombers resulted in Sydney taking the points at Stadium Australia on Saturday night. The scores were locked up at half-time and spectators thought they were in for a competitive second half. However, the wheels fell off for Essendon and a 14 goal to five goal second half resulted in a 54-point win to Sydney.
The Western Bulldogs were 39 seconds away from breaking their winning drought on the weekend. The Bulldogs led all game but couldn’t hang on to take the four points. In the dying seconds of the match West Coast moved the ball from the Bulldogs attacking zone to their forward line where Ashley Sampi marked in front of goal on the siren. Sampi kicked a goal after the siren and drew the match.
For the first time this season Geelong strung together its second win in succession. This week the victim was Carlton. Scores were close all day, but a six goal final term set-up the win. Geelong ran out winners by 40-points in front of 43,587 people at The Dome.
Round 11 was completed yesterday at the MCG when Collingwood convincingly beat Melbourne by 56-points. Chris Tarrant was back to his brilliant best booting three goals. He had great support from Scott Burns who dominated in the mid-field and finished his good work with four goals. The win put Collingwood back in the top eight.
