Hibberd, a mature aged recruit from Frankston has signed a two-year contract extension with the Bombers that will see him remain a Bomber until the end of 2014.
The 22-year-old has proven his ability as a tight defender with the ability to use the ball effectively since making his debut in round 6, 2011.
Despite suffering a few injury troubles this season, Hibberd has played ten games and provided important run off the half back line.
Essendon General Manager of Football Operations Paul Hamilton said Hibberd was set to be an important part of the club’s future.
“Michael has a big future, so we were happy to give him a two year extension and we think he will be happy to repay the faith that the club has had in him,” Hamilton said.
“He has been a little bit of a surprise packet since he has come onto the scene and our supporters love him.”
“Our supporters love him as a player, he is a talented defender who reads the play well and attacks the ball well.”
19-year-old Luke Davis was drafted to the Bombers as a flexible defender at pick 64 in the 2010 AFL draft.
He played every game for Bendigo in his first season at the club and after a strong start to this season in the VFL he suffered a number of injury setbacks.
Hamilton said Davis had showed good development since he was drafted to Essendon.
“Unfortunately Luke had a run of injuries this year but we saw through his pre-season that he has got some real potential so we were very keen to extend his contract for another year and see what he can deliver in 2013,” Hamilton said.
“He started the year in really good form and I think he would have been pressing for a senior spot.”
Hibberd and Davis become the third and fourth players to be revealed in Essendon’s ‘re-signing Facebook reveal’, unveiling seven exciting re-signings for the club.
