Some of what the fans had to say:

“Wasn't his best season. Did well when used off half-back but his possessions were well down. Perhaps could be developed into an effective tagger - his speed and endurance would be an asset in that area.” Michael Stagg

“Never lacked courage, but confidence was big factor. Give him a pre-season under his belt, he hasn’t had one in two years, and he will be back to his best.” Frank Giglietta

“Chris took a while to get going this year, but some of his later games showed his old brilliance hadn't left him. I am hoping to see him back to his best next year.” Helen Scully

“He stood out in a few games but really needs to stand up in more games because he has a large amount of talent and we need him to show it!” Nicole Zissis

“Brilliant, skilled player but did not go in and do the hard ball gets enough. Very much a fringe player and hoped the ball would come out to him. An average of 13 disposals for a midfielder is appalling.” Carol Edmeades

“Had a up and down year, he has the ability no doubt but it seems that from time to time his intensity is lacking, would not have believed it if said after the 2000 season that the 2003 season could be a make or break year for Chris.” Garrett Macdonald

“Not his best season, but still integral to the side. He is all class and one of the best tacklers I've seen. Hopefully he'll return to his 2000 Premiership form in 2003.” Graham Flynn

“Didn't really live up to all the hype surrounding him, which was disappointing. Had a few really good games, he just has to keep it up.” Danielle Hameister

THE WASH UP:

Essendon fans basically agreed that Heffernan is a supremely gifted player who didn't do his talent justice in 2002. Some felt it was a confidence issue, others felt it was the fact he hasn't done a pre-season for the past two years.

MARK HARVEY SAYS:

There is no dount that Chris’ final rating of 4.8 out of 10 is unacceptable for a player of his ability and I think that is basically what the fans have said. He has got to be able to take control when star players are down and he would probably be the first to admit he didn’t handle it too well this season. But don’t forget he was playing for Australia against Ireland a couple of years ago and starring – he certainly has the ability. He’s got to get back to doing what he does best and get the confidence back up.
