Watson a chance to return
Essendon captain Jobe Watson is a chance to return against Collingwood on Sunday as he continues to progress well in his recovery from a broken collarbone.
Watson will meet with his surgeon later in the week to determine how the fracture has healed and if he is likely to run out against the Magpies on Sunday afternoon.
Football Operations Manager Steve Alessio said Watson continued to impress on the training track.
“Jobe has been training well over the last week in full training and will continue that this week as well,” Alessio said.
“He has a meeting with the surgeon later on this week and depending on the outcome of that meeting hopefully he will be available soon enough.
“Whether that is this game or next week we are not sure but his surgeon Greg Hoy will have the last say.”
The Bombers could recall a number of senior players with Jason Winderlich, Dustin Fletcher and Stewart Crameri all in line to return.
Winderlich has missed the last fortnight with soreness but has trained well over the last week giving medical staff a positive outlook for a comeback.
“They trained strongly at the end of last week and have really pushed up and pulled up really well over the weekend.”
“They are really keen to put in a solid week on the track and if they pull up well after the main session they will be in consideration.”
Key forward Michael Hurley will have scans to determine the extent of ankle soreness he suffered following Friday night’s loss to Hawthorn.
“He coped a knock to the lower leg and he wasn’t too bad after the game but he has pulled up a bit sore,” Alessio said.
“Our medical staff will scan that and see if there are any issues but we will wait and see what the scans say but we are hopeful he will be ok.”
First year recruit Marty Gleeson has had reconstructive surgery on his shoulder which will see him miss the remainder of the 2013 season.
Hal Hunter’s ankle concern is expected to see him miss a few more weeks however defender Kyle Hardingham is expected to push for a return from a shoulder injury that saw him miss the win over Bendigo on Saturday.
