A series of honest meetings between the players and coaches has been the catalyst behind Essendon’s recent resurgence into the top eight according to midfielder David Myers.

The Bombers have won five of their last seven matches, which could have easily been seven-in-a-row despite narrow losses to Melbourne and Geelong in that stretch.

“We’ve had a lot of heart-to-heart meetings and really honest meetings,” Myers admitted.

“I think that’s been the change in the group, we’re willing to have more honest and harder conversations.

"There is a change that is starting to happen on field on game day- we’re starting to see that now- and getting more confidence as a result of that.”

The 25 year old is confident his side have identified the issues they faced overcoming lower ranked sides this season.

“Those two losses (Melbourne and Geelong) really did hurt us,” Myers said.

“As a side we felt like in both games we were in strong positions to win it and the lack of concentration and structural set up as well as on-field leadership wasn’t up to scratch in those games and it cost us four points both times.”

“We feel like our football has been improving over the last month and we were really keen to put in a strong four quarter performance."

"It is the first time this year we did that on the weekend.”

Myers said the Bombers have developed a dynamic midfield that has held the team in good stead when filling the void left by key players through injury or suspension.

“That’s been a focus for us all year, to try and be as flexible as we can through the middle of the ground,” he said.

“I think we are building that, all our midfielders aren’t just stay at home centre square midfielders. They can go forward or they can go back or to the wings.”

“I’ve had to fill a role through the middle in the last couple of weeks with the personnel that we’ve had out, but they will walk straight back in, obviously as they should when they’re fit, and I’ll just play wherever the coach puts me.”

“Whether that’s inside, wing or back, I think we all go in with an open mind these days.”

The former number six draft pick commended big-man Jake Carlsile’s unbelievable performance on the weekend which included 19 marks, 26 possessions and four goals.

“It was probably going to take a little bit of time to adjust there and credit to Jake, and Bomber as well, they’ve both stuck fat and worked really hard.”

“Particularly Jake, his attitude over the last six or seven weeks has been fantastic and even though externally he might have not been getting the reward for it, internally we’ve been really happy with his effort ant the way he’s been going about it.”

“It was probably only a matter of time before he had a performance like he did yesterday which was just outstanding.”
