Essendon Football Club has shown its support of the Fatality Free Friday initiative that is marked for this Friday, May 29.
Fatality Free Friday is the largest national road safety initiative which urges road users to make a promise to themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey road rules.
“It’s an essential event in terms of Road Safety in Australia,” Founder and CEO of the Australian Road Safety Foundation, Russell White said.
“Being the largest and only national road safety initiative, we hope Fatality Free Friday will continue every Friday and then ultimately 365 days a year.”
Heath Hocking, Michael Hurley, Adam Cooney and Cale Hooker were there for the Victorian launch of the initiative today.
“Having the players here today is very significant in rallying support and creating greater awareness in taking the pledge ahead of Fatality Free Friday.” White said.
Hocking drew an analogy between football and being safe behind the wheel.
“We are in control of our decisions on the field and sometimes a split second decision can change the game, just as it does on the road.”
The initiative focuses on decreasing the fatality rate in Australia on this day as well as every day of the year.
“By taking the pledge, it’s about going back to basics, concentrating and not being distracted,” Hocking said.
Fatality Free Friday will take place this Friday across Australia, if you would like to take the pledge to increase safety on our roads you can follow the link here.
