The VFL Bombers have gone from strength-to-strength since notching up a big win over the Tigers last weekend and will look to make it three-in-a-row against Geelong Saturday afternoon at Etihad Stadium.

And with two big injuries in Watson and Fletcher announced early in the week, it means that there will be two spots up for grabs come selection time Thursday evening.

We bring you the players who’ve been lining up outside James Hird’s office since Monday, literally banging down the door for AFL selection.

Alex Browne

Browne has finally built up his form and fitness since returning from an ACL injury at the start of the year. A 29-disposal and one-goal performance against the Tigers saw him gain the best-on-ground Doug Nicholls award, easily playing his best game to-date. Playing off the half-backline and through the midfield, Browne could easily fit the mold of a Jobe Watson replacement.

Elliott Kavanagh

Kavanagh was another Bomber who could have played his best game of the season at the right time. The 22-year-old collected 23 disposals, including six tackles and a goal. Kavanagh received high praise from coach Corrigan following his game, particularly for his unrewarded running. He is another who could easily fit the mold of a Watson replacement and step up to the AFL Bomber midfield.

Orazio Fantasia

Despite a slightly down match on the weekend, this guy has been ultra-consistent in the VFL all season. Fantasia has averaged 20.2 disposals throughout the year, and has provided the Bombers with the run and dash from the backline as well as using his precision skills to deliver the ball into the forward line. Nonetheless, his attack on the ball is ferocious and continues to be a leader for the VFL Dons week-in-week-out. If the selection was purely on form, Fantasia is your man.

James Gwilt

Based on probabilities, Gwilt seems as though a likely replacement for Fletcher in defense for the Bombers. Usually working in tandem with Ariel Steinberg down back in the VFL, Gwilt has oozed class and experience, continuing to demonstrate his ability to shut down the opposition’s most dangerous forward. The 28-year-old has already played two AFL games for Essendon so far, alongside his 126 at St Kilda, highlighting his ability to slot in alongside Cale Hooker and Michael Hurley without the blink of an eye.
