Essendon List and Recruiting Manager, Adrian Dodoro, has given the tick of approval to the new rules introduced in this year’s trade period.

Clubs were allowed to trade future draft selections and there was also a point allocation assigned to each draft pick which had an affect on clubs seeking to secure Academy players.

“I found it really interesting, it’s exciting in a way,” Dodoro said.

“It’s just something new.  I’ve been doing this for a number of years now; it’s opened up another avenue to get deals done.

“You saw a lot of deals that were getting done today.

“I think the AFL will probably sit back and review it.”

Twelve of the 18 first round selections changed hands and the Swans desire to boost its point allocation helped the Bombers complete the Jake Carlisle deal.

“It helped us because we got pick five with the Sydney Swans helping us get that deal done,” Dodoro said.

“Clubs will become far more strategic in the future and there will probably be innovations down the track where we’ll be trading on the night of the draft and those sort of things.

“We’ve just got to be really, really smart.

“Future trading is really important for our industry.”
