Interim head coach Matthew Egan has revealed his desire to one day be a head coach.

Stepping up at a tough time for the club, Egan has enjoyed his last three matches as the main man in charge, with yesterday’s win capping off a better string of performances from the team.

Speaking following the game, the former All-Australian defender revealed that his elevation had been an eye opening experience.

“This has definitely given me a little taste and I’m really grateful to the club that they gave me the opportunity,” Egan said.

“You don’t know until you get into this situation.

“It’s given me some belief.”

Having previously focused on player development, Egan had to quickly shift his focus when moving into the top job to getting a better understanding of his players as a team rather than at an individual level.

The learning curve was also made considerably easier with the wealth of knowledge that Egan had surrounding him in the coaches box.

Mark Harvey, Nathan Bassett, Mark Neeld and Neil Craig have all coached at different levels and have been able to guide Egan, helping him to create a better understanding of the position.

“I suppose the last three weeks you’ve got to focus on what I need to do a bit more,” he said.

“It’s been a little bit different for me.

“I’ve been really conscious of the coaches I’ve got around me who have got great experience and can contribute a lot… and using their input."

The three point win over Collingwood allowed the Bombers to finish a disappointing season on a high note.

After what has been another trying year for the team the win will provide some much needed relief going into the break.

“I’m extremely proud,” Egan said following the game

“There were obviously some skill errors again throughout for both teams, but i’m absolutely rapt that they kept playing.

“Even though there were few parts of quarters that I didn’t think were too consistent, they didn’t give up.

“Players are absolutely rapt in the rooms after the game.. It’s been a tough year for them.

“To see them at the end it was great reward for such a tough year.”

With Essendon VFL winning their first final over the weekend, a number of players will return to training this week - while others will have some time off before returning for the pre-season.
