Essendon’s Darcy Parish has capped off his first season in the AFL by finishing fourth in the competition’s Rising Star award.
Sydney's Callum Mills won the award with 49 votes ahead of Caleb Daniel (41 votes) from the Western Bulldogs and Carlton's Jacob Weitering 26 votes.
Parish picked up 19 votes.
The Bombers landed the former Geelong Falcon with the fifth pick in last November’s National Draft.
He made his debut in round one and went on to play 20 games for the season.
Parish averaged 21 possessions per match, including nine contested.
“Very quickly he had to step up to become one of the main midfielders for us throughout the year,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold told tonight’s edition of Bomber Radio.
“His contested ball, his clean hands and his pace to hit the contest and take the ball clean was outstanding.”
Orazio Fantasia was also nominated for the award throughout the season.
He kicked 29 goals in his 19 games in 2016.
“His speed and ball winning – we’ve seen it on a wing, we’ve seen it off half back and this year we wanted to see if he could find a way to kick goals as well which he managed to do for us,” Worsfold said
“He’s an exciting player, he’s going to have a long future and be able to impact in various roles.
“Right at the moment he shows the ability to become one of the dangerous small forwards in the competition.”
