Essendon is in discussions with defender Matt Dea about prolonging his career with the Club.
The former Richmond player was signed on the eve of the season as one the ten additional recruits.
After 31 games with the Tigers, Dea was set for a season in the VFL but went on to play 21 games with the Bombers and became a regular member of the team’s defence.
“We think he’s earned the right to gain a spot on our list,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold told Bomber Radio.
“We’re talking to him about that at the moment. He becomes a delisted free agent but he has the opportunity to stay with us if that’s what he elects to do – discussions are underway with his management.”
Dea finished ninth in the Essendon best and fairest.
Fellow recruit James Kelly also became a regular feature in the side.
Kelly finished tied in second position with Joe Daniher in the Crichton Medal despite a limited pre-season.
The 32 year old finished in the top five at the Bombers for disposals, disposal efficiency, marks, tackles and intercept possessions.
“James has pulled up well from the season – really enjoyed the year,” Worsfold said.
“He’s said he’s got a real passion for the game still, so there is a good possibility that he could get a spot on our list but we need to get through the next few weeks and get a feel for availability of spots before we can make a final decision.”
The three-time premiership winner played 20 games for the Bombers this season taking his career total to 293.
