Even if few people thought it would result in an Essendonwin, there was never any doubt that Mark Thompson and Brendan McCartney weregoing to provide the Bombers with plenty of advice before they took on Geelong.

Thompson led the Cats to two premierships during an11-season stint at the club, while McCartney was one of his long-servingoffsiders.
Both then quit Geelong and headed to Windy Hill late last year.
And as it turned out, their intelligence paid an unexpecteddividend on Saturday night when Essendon pulled off a stunning four-point upsetvictory over the Cats at Etihad Stadium.
After the game, Essendon boss James Hird credited Thompsonand McCartney with having a ""huge impact"" on his squad.
""What both of those guys havebrought is the ability to (teach players how to) position yourself and win thecontested ball,"" Hird said.
""It's just the basics that they teach and you can seethem come out in the Geelong players week in, week out.
""That's why they're such good coaches. I don't think itwas even about Essendon beating Geelong tonight, or 'Bomber' being part ofthat.
""It was just to see how our players have developed overnine months and the way they've been coached.
""A lot of Bomber and Macca have come out in the waythey played tonight.""
Before their shock win, Essendon hadn't beaten Geelong sinceround 18, 2005.
Back then Hird was the club's captain and Kevin Sheedy wasthe coach, while Thompson and McCartney were steadily building the Cats into adominant force.
""I think what's been lost in a lot of (the talk about)Bomber and Macca coming to Essendon is how much of an impact they had on those(Geelong) players,"" Hird said.
""I'm not taking anything away from Chris Scott – he's beena fantastic coach – but ... Bomber and Macca should get a lot more credit thanwhat they're getting for how they've developed this team over the last fiveyears, and how good Geelong is.
""So there was a little bit of Geelong in us tonight, inthe way that they've been coached and you've got to say it's a good thingbecause they're a great side and we're hoping to be a good side.""
Essendon youngster Travis Colyer, who booted two vital goalsin his team's thrilling victory, was also full of praise for the insightsThompson and McCartney gave the players about their Geelong opponents.
""We got to know a lot about who we were playing on,""Colyer said. ""We really felt we knew the ins and outs of their games.
""They knew everyone's strengths and weaknesses and weused it to our advantage.
""It's really good to have those guys on board.""
