After completing their primary pre-Christmas training block, the Essendon squad journeyed northbound along the Hume Freeway to Mt. Buller for an intensive two-day pre-season camp this week.
Designed to foster camaraderie, build resilience and test both the physical and mental endurance of the group, the camp featured a range of challenging activities.
The squad was divided into four teams for the duration of the camp to inject an added level of competitiveness into everything they did.
Guided by the coaching staff and expert outdoor educators, the squad participated in activities such as mountain biking, hiking, and the demanding Mt. Buller RockWire course.
Day one:
The camp commenced at Mirrimbah Park on Monday morning, located at the base of the mountain.
Here, the playing group received an initial briefing and engaged in team-building exercises that incorporated football drills to ignite their competitive spirit.
The first main activity was a 25-kilometre mountain bike ascent of Mt. Buller. This climb, performed under hot conditions, included a steady uphill ride, a time trial segment, and an authentic off-road biking experience.
The day's activities concluded at the team’s accommodation, where players regrouped over dinner and participated in recovery and cool-down exercises.
Day two:
The second day began once more at Mirrimbah Park, with the group transitioning from bikes to hiking trails.
The morning featured a competitive egg-drop challenge, aimed at promoting creative problem-solving and teamwork.
Following this, teams participated in a staggered 3km time trial incline run, navigating steep terrain to push their limits.
Once completed, the groups began their ascent of Mt. Buller along the West Ridge trail. The route offered steady inclines, single-file pathways, and occasional rock scrambles, culminating in breathtaking summit views.
Equipped with harnesses and helmets, players then tackled the challenging RockWire course, climbing sheer rock faces with intricate holds and demanding routes.
The day concluded with a well-deserved dinner, providing a moment of rest and reflection after a rigorous but rewarding experience.
The players are now on their Christmas break, returning to training on Thursday, 9 January.
