The Bombers are yet to decide on who will take on the senior coaching role in 2014 before James Hird returns to the helm in 2015.
Goodwin said on Friday being a senior coach was something he had always strived for.
The former Adelaide player will have his first opportunity to prove his case when he takes charge on Saturday night against Richmond.
"I've always set out to be a senior coach, if the opportunity arises you certainly have to look at it," Goodwin said.
"I've been working with these guys for three years and they've been outstanding and we've continued to improve our footy over those three years.
"These guys deserve to have people around them that have been consistently within the program.
The two-time premiership player and three time best and fairest winner has been an assistant at the Bombers since Hird joined the club at the start of the 2011 season.
"We've gone through a lot together, especially in the past six-and-a-half months and I certainly feel a part of that."
“They (the players) enjoy the people who work here and they've shown that throughout this season with the way they've performed," he said.
Goodwin said the team was determined to beat the Tigers in the club’s last game of the season on Saturday night.
"People get motivated by different things and that's the message to our playing group, whatever it takes you as an individual to get yourself up for this game is really important," he said.
"We've got a couple of guys retiring from our club that have been great contributors in David Hille and Nathan Lovett-Murray and some people will get motivated by that.
"Some will get motivated that they may be slightly angry by the way things have turned out.
"Or they might get angry with the fact we're not playing finals.”
"Some are angry, some are relieved and some are just looking forward to moving on.”
“I think it has been a really tough and arduous process we've gone through over six and a half months.
"We just want to move forward as a footy club and get the respect back within the community.”
