Life as an AFL Captain is often busy.  It comes with the territory.

But over the last week, Brendon Goddard has crammed more in than most.

During that time, he’s become engaged, welcomed his first child into the world – and now led his team to their first win of the season.

“Seven minutes into the last quarter I started cramping, so I thought I’ve got an excuse this week with the lack of sleep and everything that’s been going on,” he said.

“It’s been a pretty big week … it’s a fairy tale ending.”

Goddard was a driving force on a significant day for his football Club.

He picked up 27 possessions as the Bombers defeated Melbourne by 13 points.

The Dons were the better side for most of the day, but they slipped behind on the scoreboard midway through the last quarter.

Goddard said the team stuck to the basics in the dying stages.

“We just talk about keep playing footy and doing the simple things,” Goddard said.

“If the game didn’t turn for us, it wouldn’t be through a lack of effort.

“It was just about trying to simplify things for the boys, particularly with a young group.”

A crowd of more than 50,000 people was on hand to witness the final stages of a significant 24 hours for the Club.

During that time, Heath Hocking has signed a new contract, co-major partner Kia has extended its deal and the Club is also set to announce the largest apparel partnership in AFL history.

Before the match, thousands of fans walked as one to the MCG to Make a Stand for the future.

“The Stand Up campaign was pretty special,” Goddard said.

“It was a good build up to the game and going through the banner.

“We obviously acknowledged our fans after the win and walked down to them because it was pretty important.

“Our first win meant a lot to a lot of people - not only the playing group, but the supporters, all the staff and everyone involved.”
