Debra – ‘The Bomber Brass’

The Comeback Story game, Essendon v Hawthorn in 2017.

After a turbulent time in the club’s history, what a day and night for the Club and all Bomber fans.

My family was so proud and excited to play a role in the Comeback Story event. A call was put out for a music group to come play the theme song on stage at the pre-game, so I dobbed in some of my family members.

All of them are well known, champion players in the brass band world. After playing the theme song countless times on stage, they led the Bomber Army in the March to the ‘G.

The atmosphere at the game, from the pre-game to the scenes in the rooms after the game is something that will always be a priceless memory for me - a long-standing member.

I dedicate this story to my late brother, who you can see front and centre in this photo - he christened the group ‘Bomber Brass’ and it was our one and only Bomber gig. Maybe we’ll get to reform again celebrating number 17, he'd be there in spirit.

A while back, my son went to a footy show and got Sam Draper’s autograph, telling him he was going to get it tattooed on his ankle.

When it was done, he sent a photo to ‘Drapes’ to show he did it and now every time they see each other, it’s like they are best mates.

Whenever my one-eyed Magpie-supporting wife attends a Dons-Pies game with me, we seem to lose.

Going to our win over Collingwood last year was a dream night but she wasn’t able to attend.

To this day, we still discuss whether she’s a bad or good luck charm for either side.

This was taken during one of the hardest weeks of our lives, but the lunch with Dylan and Dyson turned our frowns upside down!

Ollie still insists that ‘Hepp’ is his best friend ever and sleeps with his signed boot.

I was invited to go to the EFC Sponsors Night by Chris Burke (Bomber Squad leader), but it ended up being postponed to the day of my birthday.

I thought to myself, 'what a great way to spend my birthday... meeting all the players I watch every week and take inspiration from and how I play my own game of footy.'

We get to the Sponsors Night on March 31 and I already knew it would be a great night. I had chats with some of my favourite players and got autographs and signatures.

Then, Chris calls me over and tells me he wants to grab a 'photo', so I sit down where he told me.

He brought out an Essendon birthday cake and then before I knew it, I had Caddy, Kako, Durham, Roberts, and Prior all behind me singing Happy Birthday.

This made my entire night, the most unforgettable and amazing birthday present I could ever get. Love the boys to bits for this. Go Dons!

Sharing my love for the Club with my four-year-old nephew brings me so much joy.

He has been coming to every game with me since he was just two. His love and passion for the boys (especially Harry Jones) and the game is so special. I am extremely lucky and grateful for all the wonderful memories we are making together.

Thank you, Essendon.
