Development coach Michael Hurley reviews the efforts of our AFL-listed players from the weekend’s two-point loss to the Tigers.
Nick Bryan
25 disposals, 37 hit-outs, eight clearances
‘Bristle’ played a really good game. His ruckwork is a highlight of what he does, but he also got the ball around the ground really well and supported in the contest. To have 25 disposals as a ruckman is obviously very impressive and he was one of our better players on the day.
Pat Voss
17 disposals, seven marks, three goals
‘Vossy’ was a good target for us up forward. They had a pretty solid backline so I thought he competed really well and gave us an option ahead of the ball, he kicked goals and his defensive stuff was really good as well.
Tex Wanganeen
Seven disposals, two tackles, one goal
A solid performance from Tex. Again, he worked with some of the smalls to provide good chasing pressure for us and affect the ball carrier. He showed some class by hand and foot and is continuing to work on his game nicely.
DEADLY crumb and goal from Tex Wanganeen to extend the lead for @essendonvfl 👊

Anthony Munkara
13 disposals, six marks, two goals
He certainly lifted the boys and brought some good energy. He’s been moved around in recent weeks, but played the whole game forward and got on the end of a couple which was nice. We loved his defensive efforts as well.
Alastair Lord
15 disposals, 10 kicks, four marks
‘Lordy’ did some nice things which we’ve been working on through training around driving his legs and taking the game on. He’s continuing to grow in his defensive work around the fall of the footy.
Rhett Montgomerie
17 disposals, nine marks, four tackles
‘Gomma’ had a really good battle with Noah Cumberland, who’s obviously played a fair bit of footy at AFL level. Rhett had some really strong defensive efforts and has been finding a good balance between staying at ground and impacting in the air.
Lewis Hayes
21 disposals, 18 kicks, 10 marks
‘Hayesy’ had some awesome moments, and it was nice exposure to test himself against some older and more mature bodies. His ability to get back to intercept and help out his teammates was really pleasing.
Matt Guelfi
Seven disposals, two goals, four marks
‘Guelf’ was on limited minutes coming back from injury, playing the three quarters. It was awesome to have him back, his leadership out there was really noticeable in setting up our forward structure. Kicked a couple of goals, and his defensive pressure was usual ‘Guelfi stuff’.
Cian McBride
Seven disposals, three marks
Some of his positioning behind the ball was pretty good and was unlucky at times not to finish off his work with a few more marks. He gave ‘Bryza’ (Bryan) a nice chop out by rucking in the back half that allowed him to roam the ground a bit more, which was nice.
