Fresh off a superb club debut, midfielder Will Setterfield was pleased by Essendon’s team transition offence during its round one win over Hawthorn.
The Bombers’ round one 59-point win and total score of 124 was built off the back off end-to-end ball movement, with a 66-49 inside 50-differential proving a decisive factor.
With the game in the balance and Essendon holding a 16-point half time lead, Setterfield said an 11-goal to four second half was a great reward for the major focus the side has put into improve its defence to offence.
“I think the way we came out in the second half and attacked from there was the most pleasing part and something we worked on over pre-season,” Setterfield said.
“We brought more pressure to the contest as a midfield group, started to try and on the ground ball element of the game.
“’Paz’ (Parish), ‘Junior’ (Merrett) and ‘Shiely’ (Shiel) really got to work in that area and gained territory which our forwards love when get it in there.”
Setterfield himself was a massive positive for the Bombers with a magnificent first game in the red and black.
The 192cm inside midfielder starred with 25 disposals, 10 marks and six disposals, providing a pillar of strength in Essendon's midfield.
The Bombers have a chance to back up their round one performance against Gold Coast on Sunday in the club’s first home game of the season.
Setterfield said the Bombers will have to be on their A-game against a hungry Suns side who are searching for their first win of the year.
“That defensive side of the game, we want to keep building a brand around that,” he said.
“Being strong in the contest and trying to own the front half is probably the biggest thing for us.
“They’re going to be coming out for a big win down at marvel, so we’ve got to be ready for them and be ready for Sunday.”
