Essendon has selected South Australian midfielder Angus Monfries with its first selection at the 2004 National draft. The Bombers were keen to boost its midfield stocks and have done just that with the selection of Monfries. The Sturt midfielder has been a prolific ball winner throughout his junior career.

Monfries was a South Australian under 18 representative who won All Australian honors this year. He is an AIS-AFL graduate who played well for Australia against Ireland at Under 17 levels this year.

Monfries is 180cm tall and weighs 70kg.

The first round selections of the draft went pretty much as expected.
