Essendon coach James Hird has praised Bomber fans for their incredible support during the pre-season.

As the club’s membership tally surged passed 45,000 members this week, well ahead of the same time last year, Hird said the loyal and passionate support from the red and black faithful had given the club a huge lift ahead of Round 1.

“They (the supporters) have been absolutely amazing and this club doesn’t survive without our supporters,” Hird said.

“The way they have supported myself, David Evans, Ian Robson and the players over the last six weeks has been nothing short of incredible.”

“That support is what is going to get our club through all this.”

Hird urged supporters who are yet to join as members for 2013 to show their support for the club in the most practical way possible.

“If you haven’t bought a membership please buy one because we need it more than ever right now,” he said.

“It has been incredible the letters we have had from kids, adults and people all around the world about how much they love their club and how much they support the club.

“It is touching and one of the things that will come out of all of this is the unity within the club.”

The Bombers coach praised the leadership of the club’s hierarchy throughout the investigation process.

“Obviously there is a long way to go with our investigation but the unity within the club and the leadership of our President and board has been nothing but exceptional,” Hird said.

Essendon kicks off their 2013 campaign against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

Hird said the playing group was looking forward to being able to get out onto the football field and just play footy.

“We just can’t wait to play, it has been a huge pre-season on the field and bigger off the field.”

“If we can get on there and show who we are that is the exciting thing for us.”

“I have no doubt it will be an emotional charged pre-match but that is good and that is what footy is about.”
