David Zaharakis’ fast start to the season has come as no surprise to Coach John Worsfold.
Having struggled with injury and form over the last few years, the midfielder has shown the benefits of a full pre-season averaging 32 disposals across the opening four games.
Worsfold said Zaharakis’ form stems from his hard work on the track.
“The on-field performances mirror the attitude since I’ve been at Essendon,” Worsfold said following the weekend’s game.
“It’s no surprise for me.
“Everyone else will judge him on what they’ve seen in the past, but I’m judging him on what I’ve seen since I’ve arrived.”
Zaharakis once again led the way on the field against the Cats, finishing with 34-disposals, 12 contested possessions, 284m gained and a goal.
Aside from his game day performance, Worsfold also praised Zaharakis’ maturity and willingness to accept responsibility around the Club.
Zaharakis found himself out of the leadership group once again in 2016.
He continued to work on the areas that his peers identified as needing development before being included at the beginning of the season.
The biggest concern for the midfielder was finding the balance between being a good leader through his words and by his actions on the field.
In the early stages of the season, however, it seems as though Zaharakis has found that balance.
“It wasn’t a light decision to elevate him into the leadership group this year, and he didn’t accept it lightly,” Worsfold said.
“He wanted to make sure that he could still perform on field but offer leadership off field.
“He’s been delivering on both of those.”
