Due to the significant demand in the lead-up to the Bombers’ blockbuster Dreamtime clash on Saturday night, local organisers have decided to relocate the start of The Long Walk to the WACA from the previously advertised Victoria Gardens.
Led by Essendon champions Michael Long and Gavin Wanganeen and other key dignitaries, The Long Walk will commence at the WACA and proceed past the Swan River to the Matagarup Bridge, with the walk to conclude at Optus Stadium near the Nicky Winmar statue.
The event will commence at 2:30pm AWST at the WACA, with the walk to depart from 3:30pm before arriving at Optus Stadium ahead of the Dreamtime blockbuster between Essendon and Richmond.
REGISTER NOW FOR THE LONG WALK
The Long Walk, now in its 17th year, is a charity inspired by Michael Long's walk to Canberra in 2004 to get the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda.
General manager of The Long Walk and Indigenous affairs Leanne Brooke said Western Australians had embraced the spirit of The Long Walk and Dreamtime clash.
“We are so humbled that The Long Walk has been so warmly embraced by everyone in Western Australia, and the responsible decision has been made to relocate the start of the walk due to the predicted numbers of patrons attending. The decision has been made with safety and crowd management as our utmost priority,” Brooke said.
“I encourage and invite everyone who is able to do so to join us at this historic event on Saturday in a show of support and unity for Australia’s First Nations peoples - the oldest living cultures on earth.
“We encourage anyone that is planning to attend The Long Walk to register at thelongwalk.com.au.
“We are approaching Saturday’s historic event with much anticipation and we are very proud to be taking The Long Walk to Western Australia in 2021.”
