Essendon Football Club today de-listed Gary Moorcroft. Moorcroft, 26, played 95 games with Essendon and kicked 102 goals in that time. He played 15 games last season and kicked 13 goals. Moorcroft leaves having played in two Grand Finals with Essendon. “We really need to find a ruckman and we need to create opportunities to do that at the draft table,” Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said. “I just want to thank Gary for all he has done for the team and the club. I hope he gets picked up in the draft and I really think he will – he has a lot of good football ahead of him.”
One of the highlights of Moorcroft’s career with Essendon came in 2001 when his spectacular mark against the Western Bulldogs earned him the Mark of the Year award.
Essendon will now have five selections at the upcoming National Draft on top of having secured Jobe Watson under the father-son rule and Damian Cupido and Adam McPhee via trades. The draft selections as they stand are 12, 13, 29, 30 and 76.
Essendon members know how important their support is to the financial stability of the club – without it clubs simply can’t survive. And Essendon Football Club is also fully aware that to purchase a membership and pay up front is not always convenient at this time of year. With Christmas and school holidays approaching, it can make things tough. So the Bombers have set up a couple of payment options for 2003 that will ease the burden for members.
