Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy says a kick to the calf won't necessarily keep James Hird out of next weekend's final practice match against Richmond in Mildura. Hird limped off the ground shortly after half-time. ""It was just a kick - I don't know how bad it was but if he is okay he will play next week. I don't think it is serious,"" Sheedy said after Essendon's 37-point win over Hawthorn.

""He got the ball 17 times in the 50 minutes he played so we were pretty pleased with that since it was his first real run of the pre-season,"" Sheedy said. ""We played alright but we can get better - we didn't use the ball that well coming into the forward line.""

Big forward Courtney Johns left the ground at half-time with a shoulder injury. Johns hurt the shoulder when he fell awkwardly after a marking contest. The Injury isn't serious and he is still expected to be available come round one.

""Courtney has got to learn to fall to the ground a bit smarter - he hit the deck like a packet of spuds falling off the back of a truck. He needs to do some work on that to ensure he falls properly and doesn't hurt himself,"" Sheedy said. ""we just need to keep him fit - he should have kicked four goals in the first half.""

Sheedy was pleased with the performances of a couple of young Bombers - singling out Paddy Ryder and Jay Nash.

""That was the best game Jay has played with the club without a doubt and Paddy Ryder is going to be a very good player for us,"" Sheedy said.
