Essendon players are remaining upbeat despite another tough week according to interim coach Matthew Egan.

James Hird’s departure on Tuesday has ensured the spotlight remains firmly on the Bombers as the season reaches its final weeks.

Egan said despite a difficult few days, he’s proud of the way the players have responded.

“We had a great training session yesterday and a really good meeting today, so the mood is fine, they’re ‘up-vibe’ and excited about playing this weekend,” he said.

The former Geelong player wants the team to play with some flair against Gold Coast tomorrow, but doesn’t want them to compromise the defence.

“We’ve spoken a little bit about our attack and just playing with some freedom and excitement,” Egan said.

“But we’ve been the easiest team to score against in defence so if we keep that form going we’re not going to give ourselves a chance of winning.

“So it’s not just attack, it’s a bit of everything.

“I think we can play as a ‘team’ a lot better and I’m going to focus my energy on that.”

Jake Carlisle will be central to stemming the Suns attack, with the swingman likely to get the job of marking Suns forward Tom Lynch.

Egan said Carlisle’s contribution in recent weeks had been strong and dismissed reports of discontent.

“He (Jake) was disappointed with the article in the paper,” Egan said.

“It’s something that has been blown out of all proportion.

“The things that were reported weren’t said.

“All I can talk about and judge Jake on is his actions and his actions have been super the last four weeks.

“I’ve been his line coach for the last four weeks now and he’s been really easy to coach and engage so that’s all I can judge him on.”
