The Bombers have landed their first acquisition of the 2020 AFL trade period, with the signing of key forward Peter Wright to a three-year deal.

The Bombers secured the 24-year-old from the Gold Coast Suns, trading a future fourth-round pick to acquire the services of the imposing tall.

Selected with pick No.8 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft by the Suns, the 203cm Calder Cannons product has played 66 games and booted 86 goals across six seasons.

He has made his mark as a key forward, possessing strong hands, a reliable set shot and the ability to compete in ruck contests.

A 2016 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, Wright’s best season at senior level came in 2017 when he played 22 games, booted 31 goals, took 121 marks and totalled 131 hitouts, earning him a spot in the AFLPA’s 22Under22 team.

General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said Wright will help bolster Essendon’s forward and ruck stocks for next season and beyond.

“We’re pleased to have recruited Peter from Gold Coast and have him join the club until at least the end of 2023,” Dodoro said.

“Given Peter’s strong marking and goalkicking ability, we think this is a quality acquisition for our forward line and ruck division. At 24, he’s in a key age profile for our list and should be entering the peak of his career, so it’s a real win for us to bring in someone who we know can be an asset to our playing group.

“Peter is originally a local boy, hailing from Moonee Ponds, and it’s a nice homecoming for him after six seasons with the Gold Coast Suns. We’re excited to see Peter become an important player for our side in years to come.”
