For some, it’s just a number on the back.
For Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, it’s everything.
On Sunday, the Bombers’ little magician will run out for the 100th time in the No.43.
And in doing so, have his name emblazoned on the No.43 locker beside his idol and fellow Tiwi trailblazer Dean Rioli.
It’s a dream come true for the fan favourite affectionately called ‘Walla’, who spoke emotionally in a video call with Rioli on the eve of his milestone.
“From day one when I came through the VFL, I knew that I wanted to get the No.43,” McDonald-Tipungwuti told Rioli.
“Watching you play and do your Tiwi magic got me inspired to wear the number.
“Walking to the locker and seeing your name there, I wanted to have my name under your name because it would be special to have another Tiwi player under yours.
“Thanks for making me want to achieve the dream of playing my 100th game under that number. I never would have got to my 100th game without wearing 43 on my back, and it’s because of you.
“It’s going to be a special moment, and a moment I’ll cherish forever.”
Rioli can’t help but smile like a proud father.
He’s been one of McDonald-Tipungwuti’s biggest fans since his junior days, even attempting to recruit him when coaching Aberfeldie in the Essendon District Football League.
He marvels at the 27-year-old’s durability, joking that he was “just lucky to get through 100 minutes straight” let alone 100 games during his playing days.
And while Sunday’s milestone holds huge significance for McDonald-Tipungwuti, it’s an equally proud moment for the No.43’s first 100-gamer.
“I’m extremely proud. I was very excited when you got drafted,” Rioli told McDonald-Tipungwuti.
“When you made the move down here (to Melbourne) with (mother) Jane and the family, I followed you closely and was pushing for you to go to Aberfeldie before you got drafted.
“But to see you go on and get drafted to Essendon was absolutely a special thing. You having 43 was an extra special moment for myself.
“It’s (100 games) an amazing effort, and to miss one game in 100 is something you should be extremely proud of. I am, and I’m sure the rest of the Tiwi community is as well.”
