Essendon will significantly step up its push to sign former West Coast superstar, Chris Judd, when club officials meet with the Brownlow medalist in the next few days.

Bombers' List Manager, Adrian Dodoro, said that Judd is clearly the best player available in this trade period and the club is discussing internally what to do to get him to Essendon.

""We are definately interested in him now that he's become available,"" Dodoro said.

""He would be extremely valuable to any side because he is such a champion player.

""When fit, he is the premier midfielder in the competition and, having just turned 24, still has his best years ahead of him.

""We are in contact with his manager and expect to have our first official meeting with Chris in the next few days to see where he is at and what he wants to do.

""We will put our case forward and - as a proud, successful, stable club with a lot of young talent - believe that we have a strong arguement.

""It all comes down to what West Coast and Chris Judd want and what the Melbourne clubs can offer.""
