On the eve of his 800th game milestone (251 games as player at Richmond and 549 as coach of Essendon), Kevin Sheedy wasn’t at home preparing for tonight’s match. He was over at his captain’s house supporting James Hird and his family. ""I actually had one (a glass of red) with Hirdy last night after the Footy Show,"" said Sheedy.

""I sat down and watched the show with Jim’s wife and when he came in he would of got a bit of a surprise because I am not always there after the Footy Show. So we went and opened up a nice bottle of his red – the good stuff!"" Sheedy said speaking after the game on Channel 9.

Sheedy and Hird put the off-field events of the week behind them and the master coach recorded his 800 game milestone in fine fashion against arch-rival Carlton. After a sluggish start, Essendon blew the Blues away in the third term when they booted seven unanswered goals. Adam McPhee worked hard all game and was clearly the best on ground.

McPhee topped the possessions with 25-touches and booted one goal. ""He (McPhee) has really been a terrific player. He reminds me of Billy Duckworth a lot – Duckworth was a really good player for us,"" Sheedy said.

""He can play back, he can play wing, he can play forward, he can play tall, he can play small. He has been a bonus for us and we are lucky to have him.""

Sheedy was also pleased with young players Nathan Lovett-Murray and Ricky Dyson. The pair were impressive and added forward fire power for the team. They finished with five goals between them.

""I think we are building up to a good side again. We picked up some good young players and they are starting to show some really good form. To have a rookie come onto the list like Lovett-Murray and play like he did tonight and also young Dyson is fantastic.

""We have probably played 30 players this year already and it is only Round 4. With the six or seven we have got out at the moment, the pressure is going to be on them to get a game and that is the first time that has happened in a while,"" Sheedy said.
