Former Richmond captain and dual best and fairest winner Matthew Knights has been appointed as coach of the Bendigo Bombers for season 2005. Knights, who played 279 games with Richmond, coached the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL last season. He replaces Peter Banfield who has taken over as coach at Springvale.

""It is great news for the club,"" Bendigo Bombers general manager Paul Barnard said. ""To have someone of that pedigree coaching the club will be fantastic and he is moving his family up here as well which is a real bonus for the club. I think we all saw when he played that he has an astute football brain and I’m sure he will be a major positive for us.""

The Bendigo Bombers played in their first finals’ series last year but bowed out in week one, going down to Tasmania at York Park. On top of the Knights’ appointment, Bendigo has also retained a number of senior players.

Bendigo best and fairest winner Jordan Doering has signed a new two-year deal with the club while promising youngster Kane Robins is also expected to sign a new deal this week.

And the club is also expected to announce later this week that major sponsor Bendigo Bank has agreed to a new two-year deal with the club.
