Essendon Football Club today confirmed the appointment of Mark Thompson to the position of senior assistant coach.
Coach James Hird said the club was delighted to secure a coach of Thompson’s experience.
""He has built a list that has achieved the ultimate success from scratch and his depth of knowledge will be invaluable to the Essendon coaching group for 2011 and beyond,"" Hird said.
""Between myself, Simon Goodwin, Dean Wallis and Sean Wellman we have got a fairly young coaching group. Brendan McCartney obviously adds a fair bit of knowledge and experience but the senior coaching experience that Bomber adds to the coaching panel will be of significant benefit to the club's aspirations of future success.""
The two-time Premiership coach led Geelong to 160 wins, 95 losses and three draws over 258 games from 2000 to 2010.
Thompson also played 202 matches for the Essendon Football Club from 1983 to 1996, where he won three Premierships in (1984, 1985, 1993) and captained the club over four seasons (1992- 1996).
Thompson’s appointment completes a revamped Essendon coaching panel led by James Hird. The panel includes Simon Goodwin, Dean Wallis, Brendan McCartney and Sean Wellman as assistant coaches.
