What some of the Essendon fans had to say:
""A strong, reliable backman. Unfortunately prone to a few injuries last few seasons. Is leaving a great reputation and legacy behind him. Will be missed in 2005."" (Julie Quirk)

""Will be sorely missed - his run and composure from half-back was pivotal to our success. Always courageous and used the ball well. A good leader."" (Stefano Boscaglia)

""Serviceable this year. He goes out knowing that he is not finished yet - good on him. He has had a fantastic playing career and was inspirational for a long time with his hardness and courage down back and also with his endless drives out of defence. He was a key member of the impenetrable defensive six we had back in 1999-2000-2001."" (Neville Bartos)

""His Elimination final proved why he is such a massive loss for us. Wish he was back for 1-2 more years but all the best Welly...great player, more than a servant, just brilliant. Fletch will have no one to talk to down there now!"" (Alan Love)

""A great servant of the Essendon football club and will be missed in the backline. Wellman is always reliable and very rarely beaten. Even though he only managed 12 games this year he was a strength in defence and will be missed badly in our backline, as was proven when he was injured. Thanks for the memories Sean you were a great servant of the EFC and it will be strange not seeing the number 6 taking that saving mark. Congratulations on a fine career."" (Richard Passeri)

""Leaves a huge hole across half back, which I fear we may struggle to fill. A champion of this football club. Would have loved to see him tackle Riewolt at least once this year, as I’m sure he would have done the job, no surprise that we won more games with him than without him. Thanks for the memories Welly."" (Alex Fair)

""His contribution in the backline will be greatly missed next season. Has provided run and stability in the backline, and has played consistently well throughout the year despite his unlucky run with injuries. Will be a hard man to replace in the coming seasons."" (Richard Chen)

""A great player and club man. Always played to his best and rarely let the side down, was great upon return to the side late in the year and helped us progress in to the 2nd week of the finals. Will be hard to replace next year."" (Adrian Kennedy)
