Membership for season 2008 has officially closed and Essendon has finished with a Club record 41,947 members. The final figure is a remarkable result. It is 4,963 members up on the same time last year which represents an increase of 14% year-on-year.

Essendon managing director Peter Jackson today paid tribute to the members. “It is an exceptional result,” Jackson said. “I know how much it means to the staff and players to have such great support of this Club. Members should never under-estimate what it means.”

“I know the players are determined to repay the faith members and supporters have shown in them in recent seasons. They have stuck with us and I think we are starting to develop a side that will be very competitive over the next few years.”

One of the highlights from the 2008 membership figures came in junior memberships which grew by 19%.

“This is a really important number and we are already planning some initiatives we hope will grow that category even further in years to come,” Jackson said. “The development of our youth is key to our on-field performance and the same applies to our membership.”
