Western Australian key position prospect, Courtney Johns, will have a full knee reconstruction after tests today confirmed he has ruptured his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The injury occurred late in the second quarter of Bendigo’s VFL clash with Port Melbourne on the weekend.

This latest injury set-back is a cruel blow to Johns who defied the opinion of many to overcome chronic hip injuries and play 21-games of AFL football since making his debut in 2005.

Club doctor, Bruce Reid, said the 23-year-old will visit knee specialist Julian Feller for the reconstruction in about two weeks.

“After the operation he will start rehabilitation and will be fit to play again in approximately eight or nine months,” he said.

“Most clubs have about one knee reconstruction a year so we have been lucky for the past six-seven years during which we only had two.

“Unfortunately we have had two this year with Alwyn and now Courtney so that’s very disappointing.”

Johns was taken by Essendon as a rookie pick in 2002.
