Roxburgh Rise Primary and St Carlo Borromeo Primary schools claimed victories at the 2011 Multicultural School Cup, as Essendon once again hosted the ongoing competition at Windy Hill earlier this week.

Celebrating cultural diversity and assisting migrant and refugee communities in the wider community, schools from across the north-western region of Melbourne gathered to compete in the lightning premiership style competition.

St Carlo Borromeo Primary successfully overcame Roxburgh Rise Primary in the boy’s grand final competition, with Roxburgh Rise defeating Dallas Brooks Primary in the girls’ competition.

Both successful schools will now go on to the State Multicultural Cup to represent Essendon.

Schools involved in the Multicultural Schools Program complete a series of football theory and practical lessons over six weeks, culminating in the Multicultural Schools Cup. For many of the young participants, this is their first taste of Australian Rules Football.

The round-robin style competition provided the opportunity for schools to showcase the skills they have learned throughout the course of the MSP in a fun and open environment.

The four schools that participated in the 2011 Multicultural Schools Cup were Roxburgh Rise Primary, St Carlo Borromeo Primary, Ascot Vale West Primary and Dallas Brooks Primary.

Essendon’s multicultural development officer Kashif Bouns said the Club was proud to support the ongoing initiative.

“The Multicultural Schools Cup celebrates cultural diversity in our wider community, particularly in the north-west region of Melbourne,” Bouns said.

“Wednesday’s event was extremely successful - the sun was shining and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves in a open and safe environment. This competition will go a long way in achieving our goal to use football as a vehicle that encourages community cohesion.”

The MSP Cup was run in conjunction with Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA) students.
